Cambridge Analytica accused of violating electoral laws USA

Political scandal concerning the stolen data of 50 million users, Facebook continues to gain momentum. One of the main defendants in a sensational incident, a British company, Cambridge Analytica, may soon appear before a US court. The reason for this was likely a violation of firm laws on electionsduring the presidential election campaign of 2016, and in some other cases.

Government monitoring group USA Common Cause has filed several legal complaints with the Federal election Commission (The Federal Election Commission) and the U.S. Department of justice (United States Department of Justice). Representatives of the group accused the firm of Cambridge Analyticaand its parent company the SCL Group Limited in violation of Federal election laws. According to the current legislation, foreigners are prohibited to have any relevance to the election campaigns of political forces.

In addition to juridical persons indicted, complaints also relate to several people personally. Among them Alexander nix, Executive Director of the Cambridge Analytica, its former employee , Christopher Wylie and co-founder of SCL Nigel Oakes Alexander Tyler.

According to the FEC (The Federal Election Commission) headquarters, trump paid $6 million to the British company for the services of a political advertising and Analytics, during the presidential elections in 2016. Moreover, Cambridge Analytica has provided such services 17 other political organizations in the United States, among which the presidential campaign of Ted Cruz. Current Advisor to the President for national security Affairs John Bolton also resorted to the help of this company.

In the complaints filed alleged that Cambridge Analytica allowed to collect and analyze data to foreign nationals, and it was forbidden by US law. The control group Common Cause requires FEC and the Ministry of justice to verify the possible cases of interference in the electoral process by foreigners. However the charges did not relate to Donald trump and his campaign, because nominally the headquarters of then-candidate may not know about violations. At the same time, political scandal is gaining weight and may soon become another problem for the US President.
