The Senator from Arizona, a war veteran and former presidential candidate John McCain has died at the age of 81, several days after he became aware of his decision to stop cancer treatment. According to the family statement, the Senator died on Saturday, August 26, surrounded by family.
«I was with my father at the end, and he was with me in the beginning. — wrote in an official statement the McCain’s daughter Meghan For thirty-three years that we spent together, he raised me, taught, corrected, comforted, inspired and supported me in everything. <…> The coming years and the days will not be the same without dad — but still it will be good days full of life and love — with the example that he gave us.»
In his memoirs published in may, McCain, who was diagnosed with a severe form of brain cancer in 2017, wrote that I would not like to leave this world, but not going to complain about his fate.
«It was a good journey. I strive for great goals, seen miracles, had fought in the war and helped to make peace. I had how to live in comfort, be fully deprived, to be all alone, and enjoy company of heroes. <…> I found a small place in the history of America and their own time.»
Former us Vice-President Joe Biden commented on the death of a political opponent and a close friend, saying that «the life of John McCain is proof that some truths are immortal. Willpower, courage, honesty. Life, embodying these truths, casts a long shadow — as is the case of John McCain».
A farewell ceremony will be held at Washington National Cathedral, after which McCain will be buried in Annapolis (MD).
