5 years after sandy, homes in Red Hook will get a new roof

Next week, nearly five years after hurricane sandy swept through the area in New York City Housing Authority will begin the repairs that involve the replacement of all 28 roofs in houses of Red Hook. The project, valued at $ 63 million, will be financed from the Fund FEMA, according to DNAinfo.

Reconstruction is the first phase of the five-year plan of renovation, which also includes the installation of new boilers, backup generators, and many other upgrades, said the head of the office of housing in new York at a press conference on Tuesday.

«We are strengthened by employing technologies that are resistant to hurricanes, to NYCHA residents and all new Yorkers can feel safe,» says Shola Olathe, CEO of NYCHA.

As the first stage of repair, the roof of each building will be reinforced with the special liquid coating that will eliminate leaks and provide insulation.

It is expected that the reconstruction of the roof will be completed by the fall of 2019. Meanwhile, in the spring of 2018 will begin work on the installation of flood protection of the basement and other parts of buildings, which will last until the end of 2019.

Congresswoman Nydia Velasquez believes that after last week, Houston suffered from hurricane Harvey, more important than ever that new York learned a lesson from the past and applied their experience in practice.

«We need to remember the lesson of sandy,» says Velasquez. «In less than five years, our country has faced three strong storms — sandy, Harvey, and now Irma. We must ensure that restored us will be able to withstand the elements».
