Report | Metro new York is a nightmare

This year metro is not pleased the people of new York. Trains are constantly delayed, equipment breaks down, and passengers regularly late for work, stuck in this nightmare. After two emergency, which occurred in may of this year due to system failure, the head of Brooklyn, Eric Adams has commissioned Independent budget office city (IBO) to determine the exact scale of the tragedy. On Thursday officials released a detailed report on this issue and, unfortunately, is not good.

The number of late trains has increased dramatically over the last 5 years

In the course of their research, IBO used data from the MTA, which shows that trains were delayed more often. In January 2012, the metro system was recorded 22 240 delays on weekdays. In may 2017 this figure rose to more than tripled to 67 452 delays.

Even more depressing is the increase in the number of delays, caused by congestion of the system passengers in January 2012 this indicator was at the level of 4,222 delays on weekdays, and in may 2017, he rose 539%, to 26,990 delays. And despite the fact that the number of passengers over the same period grew by only 8.5%.

The worst things on lines 4,5 and 6

According to the rules of MTA, the train arrives at the station on time if the delay time does not exceed 25 percent of the gap between the trains. In other words, if the train is supposed to arrive every four minutes will not be considered as delay that he will be here in 5 minutes. Throughout the subway system for the period January 2015 to may 2017 standards corresponded to approximately 77.9%, however, the indicators on different lines vary considerably.

Lines 5 and 6 are the least reliable (for this metric), here comes the time 66 and 66.8 per cent of the trains, respectively. Line 4 not gone far ahead, with the figure of 70.2%. In IBO, said that one of the main reasons for this problem is the fact that the trains of lines 4 and 5 use the same tracks in Manhattan.

The most reliable, according to the report, the lines are G, D and Q. Here to meet MTA standards, 82.5, 80.1 and 79.4 percent , respectively. It’s certainly not 100% punctual, but compared to the other lines, these results are hardly a performance record.

The increase in delay is costly to the people of new York

IBO estimates that in may delays cost passengers an average of 34,900 working hours for a standard working week. For comparison, in 2012 this figure was more than 10,000 hours less 24,023 hours. In monetary terms these losses amounted to 1.23 million dollars a day , or 307 million annually. Fortunately, the annual gross domestic product of new York reached 910 billion, so the monetary value of delays in the subway is not a great loss for the city budget. IBO notes that the cost of delays is not too affects jobs with flexible work schedules, but late trains reduce the free time of the passengers that they are very frustrating.

The results of a study of the IBO, in General, do not surprise any of those who use the city’s subway, however, the report clearly illustrates with numbers the statement that runs the subway is disgusting. Currently, MTA is implementing a plan to deal with the delays cost of 880 million dollars, but so far, it looks like in the foreseeable future, relief can be expected.
