Due to sharply falling sales and closing stores, shopping network, Macy’s forced to start to look for new ways to attract customers into their stores. Given that the current audience is a little surprise, analysts suggested a rather unconventional solution to the problem: to create a community garden on the roof of its flagship store at Herald Square.
Currently, the leadership of the trade network is considering a plan to create a rooftop of a huge shopping center on 34th Street open area where the garden will be located, and several restaurants.
According to Doug Sessler, Vice-President of real estate company, every day this store is becoming more valuable to the network, because the «centre of gravity» in Manhattan gradually shifted to the South-West to the Hudson Yards.
Roof gardens have long been actively used in such densely populated cities as new York, to obtain additional space for restaurants and bars. Although it is unusual to combine them with stores, this idea is not quite so wild. In London Department store Selfridges recently opened a seasonal restaurant on the roof called The Roof Deck, and in Paris, the Galeries Lafayette and Printemps have opened access to customers on its roof.
