According to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, around the world there are about 2.2 billion children and adults suffering from health problems related to being overweight or obese.

Overall, about 30% of the world population suffers from weight problems, while 10% of them are obese. People are considered to be suffering from overweight, if the BMI of their body is in the range of 25 to 29, and obese when the index is 30 or more.

Among the 20 most densely populated countries with a high level of obesity among children and young people were recorded in the U.S. — almost 13% of the young population. Egypt, in turn, topped the list of countries in which the largest number of adults with obesity — 35%. In second place, surprisingly, is located in China. Well, the United States took an honorable 3rd place with only 79.4 million people with obesity.

But the lowest obesity rates were recorded in Bangladesh and Vietnam, only 1% of the population.

The analysis has covered 195 countries. Data were investigated for the period 1980 to 2015.
