More than 5000 pieces of illegal arms were confiscated on the streets of Chicago since the beginning of this year. It is reported by DNAinfo, citing police data.
Statistics show that day, the police seized in Chicago up to 24 illegal weapons. The weapons are seized during 32% of arrests conducted in the town. At the same time, the number of shootings in Chicago has fallen, but the number of murders remains the same.
A lot of weapons, according to police, comes to Chicago from Indiana and Wisconsin, where the procedure for obtaining a permit and buying it much easier. The cubs just go to another state, buy there, for example, a gun, and then go home and use it here. The problem is that tracking is virtually impossible. A single database or registry exists. It can be assumed that the confiscated 5000 units is only a fraction of what really is in Chicago today.
The police say that a substantial part of the seized weapons is a «war» that is unacceptable.
«We really need to have a law that will allow us to track the weapons after purchase,» said superintendent of Chicago ‘s Eddie Johnson. «Until we get a good tracking system for these things, we’ll see what we see now.»
