According to Cuomo, depending on the size and workload of the station, enterprises and public organizations of new York may annually contribute up to 600 thousand dollars in the MTA, and specifically selected by the enterprises themselves the station.

The money will be used to improve safety, maintenance and appearance of the station. In turn, stations will be able to rename in honor of sponsor – for example, as the name of the British Bank Barclays is immortalized in the subway station near Brooklyn arena.

«We need to increase the participation of our residents in the MTA, needs to be civic engagement,» said Cuomo.

According to Cuomo, in four boroughs of new York will choose at 18 stations – the busiest or dirty. A total of 72 station sponsors will be able to invest. MTA Chairman Joe Lhota added that this plan is still in the early stages of development, but he likes the idea.

«It’s possible, but we have to see how it will work,» said Lhota.

For example, in Los Angeles, such a plan failed. The Board of Directors of Metro has rejected such a concept, fearing that the choice of which company will sponsor, can lead to numerous legal claims.
