After the events in Charlottesville a city decided to demolish the monument dedicated to the memory of the Confederacy.

New York is no exception – recently mayor bill de Blasio saidthat «the city will get rid of the symbols of hatred.» In new York, there are monuments to officers of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee in the campus Bronx Community College (soon dismantled), Church memorial plaque in the Church St John’s Episcopal (dismantled on Wednesday) and the streets in Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn (not yet renamed).

But it came to metro. In particular, up to tens of mosaicsthat adorned the station Times Square at the entrance to 40th Street. Mosaic in color and resemble the Confederate flag.

This decoration station appeared in 1917. As told by historian and expert on the Civil war David Dzeko, perhaps the architect did it in honor of the former New York Times publisher Adolph Ochs, a southerner with «close ties to the Confederation.»

But the MTA told the publication Gothamistthat the mosaic is a symbol of times square, which means «crossroads of the world».

«In place of the MTA, I would have deleted this mosaic,» says Arias, Satlin, a musician from Harlem. «In this multicultural city would not want to see symbols, reminiscent of the Confederacy».

Representatives of the MTA repeat that the mosaic is not associated with the Confederate flag, but the company still decided to redo the drawing.

«It’s a design based on geometric shapes, but to avoid confusion, we will change it», — said the employee of the MTA’s Kevin Ortiz.

He did not specify exactly what changes you plan to make and how soon.
