Storm Elsa is approaching Florida. Where is the storm warning in effect?

As Storm Elsa approaches Florida -Keys, a tropical storm warning has been issued for parts of central Florida. This includes Sumter County and parts of Marion County.

The tropical storm was centered 50 miles southwest of Key West at 5 a.m. Tuesday, forecasters said. Elsa was moving north and northwest at about 12 mph with maximum winds of 60 mph.

Elsa is forecast to pass near theFlorida Keys Tuesday morning >.

Then, forecasters expect the storm to pass near or over parts of Florida's west coast on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The National Hurricane Center also says a few tornadoes are possible in parts of Florida on Tuesday and continue into Wednesday.

Forecasters say the Florida Keys and the southwestern and western parts of the Florida peninsula will see 3 to 5 inches of rain, which could rise to 8 inches tomorrow.

No rainfall in the rest of Florida should exceed 6 inches.

A hurricane warning is currently in effect during Florida:

  • from Egmont Key to the Steinhatchee River

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Florida:

  • Florida Keys, from Craig Key in the west toDry Tortugas
  • in the Cuban provinces of Matanzas, Mayabeque, Havana and Artemisa
  • on the west coast, north and west to the Ochlockonee River
