Scotland could become the first country in the world that free will provide feminine hygiene products to women of all ages.
Scottish bill to «periodic goods» was nominated a Deputy Monica Lennon and has already passed its first vote in Parliament.
«This is not a luxury,’ said Lennon. — Are they really needed, and nobody in Scotland should not do without them. We are changing the culture, and really great that other countries are closely watching what we do.»
As reported by ABC, the proposal will cost the country is 24.1 million pounds a year (about $31 million).
These goods in Scotland are now taxed at 5%, and some women are unable to afford them.
A recent survey conducted by Plan International showed that 12% of young women replace proper hygiene and other things.
Every seventh girl had to take hygiene items from friends, because they could not afford it. The survey also showed that a fifth of respondents moved to a less suitable product for the cost.
Now the question about how the program will work. According to one proposal, the women may be given a special card that will allow you to pick up what they need. A similar system people get free condoms.
Now the bill needs to be considered in the appropriate Committee, where it can be changed or developed.
