Svetlana Tikhanovskaya wants to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize

Donald Tusk, chairman of the European People's Party (EPP Group) and ex-chairman of the EU Council, proposed nominating Belarusian oppositionists Svetlana and Sergei Tikhanovskikh for the Nobel Prize.

“I am grateful to you all for the absolute support of our friends from Belarus. — he said, addressing the EPP members in the European Parliament — We do not know when and how their struggle for freedom will end, but we know which side is the truth.

“I think the EU will leave a powerful message if it nominates Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and her husband Sergei, who is still in prison, for the Nobel Peace Prize — thus paying tribute to all Belarusians who are now participating in the most peaceful movement in many years.”

“I believe it will be a strong signal if the EU nominates Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and her husband Sergei, who is still in prison, for the Nobel Peace Prize, to pay tribute to all Belarusians engaged in this most peaceful movement in years”.

According to the CEC of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko won the presidential elections in Belarus six times, receiving 80% of the votes — however, the oppositionist did not recognize the results, accusing the government of falsifying data.

Shortly thereafter, the country was engulfed in massive protests that have been going on for a month. The current government suppresses them with the use of force, some of Tikhanovskaya's supporters were detained and, presumably, received threats against them.
