Eddie Van Halen — legendary guitarist and co-founder of Van Halen — has died after a long battle with throat cancer. He was 65 years old.

Sources with direct ties to the rock star told TMZ that he passed away at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, surrounded by his wife, Janie, son of Wolfgang, and brother and drummer Alex.

After battling cancer for over 10 years and hospitalized several times over the past year, Eddie's health has deteriorated critically in the past 72 hours, according to sources. Doctors discovered that throat cancer had spread to the brain and other organs.
