A group of Japanese scientists turned their attention to ostriches, which can produce several types of antibodies that neutralize foreign bodies in the body. In February 2021, specialists introduced deactivated coronavirus particles into the bodies of laboratory ostriches. With the help of this experiment, they were able to obtain a large amount of antibodies found in the laid eggs of birds.

The material thus obtained served as the basis for creating a protective filter. Scientists treated it with a fluorescent dye and placed it in a mask. In case of contact with COVID-19 particles, its surface begins to glow in the ultraviolet spectrum. Testing of the new product was carried out over 10 days with the participation of 32 patients who were diagnosed with coronavirus.

Japanese experts discovered that the masks worn by the participants in the experiment reacted to ultraviolet light. Later, the team of scientists expanded the experiment to 150 volunteers. The result again confirmed the effectiveness of the luminous mask. According to the head of the experiment, Yasuhiro Tsukamoto, in the future such a mask will become a simple way to test for coronavirus, available to everyone.
