34-year-old Arthur Martynovich, Builder of Sheepshead Bay (Brooklyn), accused of crimes of hate.
According to court documents, on January 15, a man walked into a Brooklyn restaurant Seaport Buffet on Emmons Avenue with a hammer and attacked the unsuspecting victims. He allegedly told the employee-Latino, that they will not suffer, and then started beating workers of Asian descent gun to the head.
Chef Seaport Buffet, the 34-year-old Fufi POON, died in hospital the same day. Later, on 18 January, died the restaurant owner, 60-year-old Khong Ng-Thang, 24 Jan died 50-year-old Manager Tsz Mat Pung.
Martinovic was arrested in the night, when it was attacked. At detention the man was in an unstable state and «all the time muttering». According to court documents, during interrogation the suspect admitted that he did it after watching the movie about the abuse of Chinese men to women.
«Chinese men are awful. They keep their women in captivity, said Martinovich. I brought a hammer to prove their love to women».
The leaders of the Asian-American community in Brooklyn insisted on accusations of crimes of hate.
«It was brutal, horrifying and painful attack on three totally innocent, hardworking men who were targeted simply because they were Asians, said the kings County district attorney Eric Gonzalez. — Sheepshead Bay, like all of Brooklyn, is famous for its diversity and will not tolerate vicious attacks filled with hatred in your community. I’m determined to get justice for these three victims and their grieving families, friends and neighbors.»
Martynovich was charged with murder first and second degree, which identifitseerida as crimes of hate, as well as in the attack on two police officers after his arrest. Martinovich’s lawyer insists that his client undergo psychiatric examination.
