Transgender woman found dead in the chamber of Ricerca. Activists demand answers

Friday, may 7, in the jail at new York’s Rikers island was found dead inmate.

According to sources in the prison cell for women Rose M. Singer Center found the body of 27-year-old Lalin Polanco.

The Department of corrections (DOC) in new York on Saturday tweeted that it was investigating the «tragic death» and that they «take this matter very seriously».

«We determined that death was not the result of violence or murder,» — said in Twitter DOC.

However, lawyers representing the family of Lalin, issued a statement on his behalf, stating that their «shakes and disturbs the stony silence from the Department of corrections, the mayor, the NYPD and city authorities.»

«We are broken with grief over the death of our beloved Lalin, whose bright light was an inspiration to all who knew her, said her family, in its statement, adding that the city «failed to protect Lalin». — Family wants answers, and we have the right».

Family Lalin and human rights groups are demanding answers and a full investigation.

Advocacy group VOCAL-NY, Anti-Violence Project and DecrimNY holding a rally today, 10 June at 18:00 in the criminal court of the County of new York in lower Manhattan.

Sister Lalin in Yonkers launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist in funding the funeral Lalin. She has been in Rikers since her arrest in April for assault and drug possession.

«This is a tragic loss and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, said the Commissioner of the correctional institution Cynthia Brann. — We conduct a full investigation, because the safety and well-being in custody of the people is our top priority.»

Lalin was supposed to be out in about a week.
