Authorities say a 12-year-old boy shot and killed an armed man who broke into his family’s home in Louisiana and threatened his mother.

According to news agencies, the incident occurred on June 30 near Clinton. According to East Felician Parish Sheriff Jeffrey Travis, 32-year-old Brad LeBlanc, was armed with a gun when he attacked the woman, whose name was not disclosed, at her home.

LeBlanc drove the woman inside, and a struggle broke out between them. According to Travis, her son, who was also not named by the authorities, feared for his mother’s life and shot LeBlanc with a hunting rifle. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Travis said that the authorities currently have no plans to press charges against the boy, according to The Advocate. When the sheriff finishes the investigation, the local district attorney will decide whether the shooting was justified.

Jonathon Barker of Clinton was arrested in connection with the incident. He was charged with second-degree murder, aggravated burglary and aggravated kidnapping. Travis explained that although Barker is not directly accused of murder, his participation in the robbery led to LeBlanc’s death. In addition, Jennifer Bond was charged with complicity in a crime.

The sheriff told WAFB-TV that he remains in touch with the woman whose house was broken into, and now she is trying to help her son recover from the shooting.

«The mother understands that he will need treatment and that he needs to talk to someone. [She] helps him understand that he is a completely normal person who has got into an abnormal situation, » Travis said.
