Harvey Weinstein was convicted of rape but acquitted on major criminal charges

A jury in new York condemned the 67-year-old Harvey Weinstein for rape 3rd degree and criminal sexual act 1st degree.

A jury in new York convicted Weinstein for rape 3rd degree, a former actress Jessica Mann, but also for criminal sexual conduct 1st degree vs Mimi Haley, a former assistant for the production of «Project runway».

However, the jury found him not guilty of two counts of sexual assault, for each of which he would be sentenced to life imprisonment. He was also acquitted on charges of rape 1st degree Jessica Mann.

Now, he faces a sentence of 5 to 25 years.

The jury of seven men and five women deliberated for five days, causing serious concern among his accusers.

More than 80 women have accused the producer who received an Oscar for «pulp fiction» and «the King says,» sexual assault and harassment for decades. The charges were based mainly on the testimony of Haley and Mann, each of which took the liberty to describe what just happened in front of a jury.

In the Manhattan court, prosecutors called four other accusers as witnesses and alleged victims. Among them was actress Annabell Sciorra, who starred in «the Sopranos.» She accused Weinstein of rape in the early 1990-ies.

Weinstein, who showed no emotion during sentencing, pleaded not guilty in this case and denies all charges.

His lawyers argued that the trial was an example of what the movement #MeToo is out of control.

Weinstein handcuffed and placed into custody just after noon Eastern time. He needs to be sentenced March 11. According to NBC, Arthur Aidala, one of the lawyers of Weinstein, told reporters outside the courthouse that his client plans to appeal, calling it a «persistent and influential».
