The new York court sentenced Harvey Weinstein to 23 years in prison

Wednesday, 11 March, the former movie Mogul Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years imprisonment on charges of rape and sexual assault.

The prosecutors said the 67-year-old Weinstein has earned a severe punishment for having «lured women under his control» to commit sexual assault.

Weinstein faced a minimum of five years of imprisonment and a maximum of 25 years in prison on charges of committing sexual offences in the first degree, and the maximum sentence of 4 years imprisonment for rape in the third degree.

He was acquitted on three other charges, which entailed a possible life sentence.

The charges against Weinstein created a movement #MeToo. His trial was seen as a landmark moment for such cases.

Martin horn, former Commissioner of corrections of new York, said the celebrity status of Weinstein can make him a target for other prisoners who may want to «make a name», while the severity of the sentence may cause concerns about suicide.

«But they will make sure that nothing happened while he is in custody,» said Horne, who now teaches at the College of criminal justice.

Harvey Weinstein told the court on Wednesday, the movement #MeToo accused men in «the things that no one understands» and added that he was «worried for the country».
