The new law will limit the ability of new York’s Airbnb landlords

On Wednesday the city Council voted for a bill that would limit the ability of landlords on such services as Airbnb, with mandatory registration.

The bill, which was first proposed in may, is designed to prevent the creation of illegal hotels and fraudulent schemes with online platforms. Once a month, homeowners will be required to provide the city authorities with the lists of addresses, checked their on-line services, information about the size of this housing, as well as their full names and places of residence. For violation of the rules will be fined up to $1,500.

Airbnb has opposed the bill, saying it would adversely affect low-income new Yorkers who use the platform as a source of additional income, helping them to make ends meet. According to the company, the City Council deliberately detrimental to the online services to protect the interests of hotel business, from which Council members receive donations in the «thousands of dollars». A representative of Airbnb Liz Debold said that the bill would lead to «uncontrolled diskriminatsii and violation of personal space new Yorkers».

The bill will come into force after it is signed by mayor De Blasio.
