Unknown new York: a secret bunker underneath the Brooklyn bridge

Even when you think that in new York there is not one unexplored area, this city is still something to surprise us. For example, here’s an interesting fact: under the Brooklyn bridge is (not so) secret shelter from the Cold war.

A nuclear bunker is inside one of the massive stone arches under the main entrance bridge from Manhattan. It is filled with all necessary supplies, including drugs such as dextran (used to treat shock), water reservoirs, paper blankets and still edible crackers.

Forgotten bunker was re — discovered in 2006, when the city conducted a regular check of technical condition of the structure. Previously, the city authorities did not disclose the location of the object in order to ensure security.

It is worth noting that the boxes with food are two significant dates: 1957, when the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite, and 1962, which began the Cuban missile crisis.

The bunker is not the only secret of the bridge. On the Brooklyn side between the bridge’s Foundation is a series of eight rooms, Ankera the Brooklyn bridge. It was created by the architect who designed the bridge, John Roebling. Initially, there were plans to arrange Seating yard, however, this idea was never implemented. Later the premises were used as a municipal warehouse, in addition, from time to time there are held art exhibitions. In 2001 the premises were closed for security reasons.

The interesting thing is that most of the tens of thousands of people who every day cross the bridge, don’t have a clue about what’s under the bridge (in theory) you can hide in case of danger. Secrets and secrets to be known only to the chosen.
