Surgeons at children’s hospital of Philadelphia successfully separated the ten-month-old conjoined twins Erin and Abby Delaney from North Carolina, reports ABC7.
After an 11-hour operation, they managed to separate the girls ‘ fused heads. This is the rarest kind of conjoined twins, the so-called «craniopagus».
«Separating conjoined twins is a very complex operation, girls have a long recovery, but we are very hopeful for a positive outcome,» said plastic surgeon, Dr. Jesse Taylor.
A team of surgeons at this hospital already in the 23rd time in the last 60 years have divided Siamese twins, but connected heads — for the first time.
Erin and Abby were born prematurely in July 2016 with a caesarean section.
«When we get home, we’ll have a big party. Celebrate their first birthday,» said the twins ‘ mother, Heather Delaney.
